Rugged solar cell - based on molybdenum, selenium and magnesium metasilicate acid, may be mfd. to any dimension by deposition onto plastics sheet
The solar cell is efficient, easily mfd. in all dimensions, and robust. It may be used in generator applications, such as radio receivers or alternator-water pumps. The anode consists of a thin layer of magnesium metasilicate acid and is sepd. from the cathode, a mixt. of equal pts. of molybdenum on carbon and selenium, by a thin sheet of plastic. The plastic is pref. ethylene glycol polyterephthalate. The anode is between 10 and 200 microns thick with a metal strip connection and is exposed to the light. The plastic layer is between 50 and 250 microns thick, and the cathode about 1 mm thick. One face of the plastic is blasted with magnesium metasilicate powder and molybdenum bisulphide which is allowed to dry. Tin electrodes are then placed on the surfaces. T e cell may be made with dimensions giving a surface area less than 800 mm2 which cannot be achieved with monocrystalline material and known techniques.
