The handset allows simple replacement of its associated cord and short-circuiting of the microphone. The two plastics housing halves contain the microphone and earpiece connected to the cord through a printed circuit board. The cord terminates in a connector which locates in a hole in the housing and has a resilient tongue which cooperates with a shoulder stop in the housing, to prevent withdrawal of the connector unless the tongue is pinched against the connector. The connector has a receiving socket engaging a pin at the circuit board. A short circuit tongue is mounted inside the housing against a resilient tongue formed in the housing. The housing tongue is deflected by the user's finger to displace the short circuit tongue against the circuit board and short the microphone.
