The ship's tank is partic. for an oil tanker, and avoids pollution by the ballast water when this is discharged. It is divided into two compartments of variable volume. This is done by a fully-compressible flexible bellows, the mouth of which is sealed to the edge of an opening in the bottom of the tank, and open to the sea. The bellows can be of synthetic tissue such as polyamid, coated on both faces with elastomer material resistant to hydrocarbons with a high content of aromatics.
