The method comprises the steps of diffusing mercury into at least one surface of a body of mercury cadmium telluride At the operating temp. the body has the characteristics of p-type material. The surface then has an adjoining layer with an excess of mercury. A mask is then laid over the surface and the unmasked portion is subjected to a conversion treatment to produce a localised surface layer which comprises mercury derived from the surface adjoining layer. The mask is then removed and the body heated to out-diffuse mercury from the previously mashed portions of the surface. simultaneously, a quantity of mercury is introduced into the surface adjoining portion below the localised surface layer to maintain an excess of mercury. This layer then has the characteristics of n-type materials and several p-n junctions are obtained.
