The appts. used to assist at the birth of a calf includes a long chassis with a supported ring at one end, through which the new-born calf passes. Two cables ending in loops pass through this, and may be attached to the feet of the calf. The two cables are attached to two drums which are coupled to an electric motor by a reduction gear system. To assist at the birth, the two drums may be controlled together, or independently to apply force to pull the calf from the cow. Two clutches enable the two drums to be controlled separately. An electrical switch detects the tension applied, and is arranged to cut off the supply to the motor if this tension exceeds a certain level.
