Spaced armour for armoured vehicle - consists of grid carrying cartridges which explode to contact on divert missile without piercing armour

The spaced armour for an armoured vehicle deflects armour piercing shells having a high speed. The area to be protected is covered by a grid (1) with an explosive cartridge fitted into each rectangular hole. A thinner metal plate (3) behind the grid, supports the bases of the cartridges. To simplify assembly, both plates can be secured by hinges in front of the area to be protected. Each row of cartridges is offset from the adjacent row. When the nose of a shell strikes the nose (5) of a cartridge, the latter explodes so that the shell is deflected, without piercing the plates.
