Thermally insulating building blocks are constructed by partly filling an ooen mould with a wet concrete mix contg. dispersed particles of hollow insulation material (I), superimposing a slab of open cell expanded polystyrene with sufficient pressure for the underlying wet mix to penetrate into the expanded layer, and then covering the cellular slab with a further quantity of wet concrete contg. expanded filler particles which partly permeates into the top of the slab. After setting, the composite casting may be cut into smaller standard size blocks. Suitable formfg. "load bearing" or "non-load bearing" blocks, depending on the characteristics and quantities of the insulating fillers incorporated. Pref. the filler particles (I) are of expanded polystyrene. Simpler and stronger than superficially bonding together, the three constituent layers form three separate coherent prefabricated layers.
