The electrolyzer comprises a horizontal housing (1) made of electrically insulated material, an anodic plate (5) at one end of the housing provided with a plurality of blade shaped electrodes (10) vertically arranged along the housing axis, a cathodic (3) plate at the opposite end of the housing provided with a plurality of blade shaped electrodes (7) vertically arranged along the housing axis, and at least one bipolar electrode element with blade shaped anodes (8) and cathodes (9) vertically arranged on opposite sides thereof on the housing axis to interleaf with the electrodes of the next unit. An inlet nozzle (A) is provided for introducing fresh electrolyte at one end of the housing (1) and a nozzle is provided for removing treated electrolyte at the opposite end. A space is provided above the electrode assembly for gas disengagement and removal, a space is provided below the electrode assembly for solid particles collection, and means (4, 6) are provided for impressing an electrolysis current thereon. The arrangement enables immediate removal from the interelectrodic gap of formed hydrogen and solid particles resulting from secondary reactions of impurities in brine electrolytes, which otherwise would cause flooding and clogging of the cell.
