PURPOSE:To improve measurement precision by estimating the peak value of thermal fluorescence and disallowing the gain switching of an amplifier approximately at the peak value when it is unnecessary. CONSTITUTION:A photoelectric converter 3 converts thermal fluorescent light from a heated element 1 for the quantity of thermal fluorescence, and an amplifier 4 has an amplitude degree switching part according to the level of an input signal so that amplification is carried out invariably in a linear area; the integral value of its amplified output signal is counted at a section 8, and multiplication 7 by a correcting constant corresponding to the amplification degree is carried out to supply the result to a display part 10. In this case, the amplified signal is processed by A/D conversion 5 and this conversion output is compared with pieces of information on the characteristics of the amplifier 4 and glow curve characteristics of the element 1 stored in a CPU7 to judge the necessity of gain switching of the amplifier 4 according to the arithmetic result, putting the amplification degree switching part in operation only when it is necessary.
