1505254 Methane production HALDOR TOPSE A/S 2 July 1975 [3 July 1974] 29418/74 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] A gas containing methane is produced by reacting hydrogen with carbon oxides using a catalyst consisting substantially only of 15-40% wt. of nickel or nickel oxide (calculated as nickel oxide) on a zirconia-alumina support having a zirconia/alumina weight ratio of 0À05 to 2À0:1. The feed gas may result from the gasification of coal; the water gas process; the gasification, e.g. partial oxidation, of fuel oils or the steam reforming of naphthas. Steam is added to the feed to prevent carbon deposition and part of the product gas is recycled as an aid to temperature control. The exemplified feed gases comprise (i) 25 vol. per cent CO and 75 vol. per cent H 2 ; (ii) 16 vol. per cent H 2 , 60 vol. per cent CH 4 and 23 vol. per cent CO 2 ; and (iii) 23À9 vol. per cent CO, 74À6 vol. per cent H 2 , 0À6 vol. per cent CH 4 and 0À9 vol. per cent CO 2 . The catalyst bed temperature may vary from 271‹ C. at the inlet to 600‹ C. at the outlet.
