During operation of a baling machine the ease with which the bale passes through the machine depends strongly on the moisture content of the baled material. This normally requires frequent adjustment of the baler to compensate for the variations. A braking element lies on top of the bale, and is able to move in the direction of bale movement. The brake is linked to a roller and two spring biased levers, so that it adopts a position which depends on the moisture content of the bale. As a result of the lever linkage, the pressure acting down on the bale is adjusted by the movement of the brake in order to automatically compensate for the varying dampness. The two springs operating the mechanism may be tightened to the required degree by two handles.
