The multi-purpose chest has a table board (13) supported by legs, the latter being built up of detachable sections (16,17). Thus the board with the top leg sections can be removed from the bottom ones, so as to form a separate short-legged table. The bottom leg sections can be joined together in pairs to allow their use as head and bottom end frames for a bed, while the sections can consist of planks fitting together in line. One or more removable drawers can be accommodated below the board, allowing modification into a writing desk or bed.
