The packaging machine has a cellular conveyor belt (2) in which the openings define the positions of the apples. A web of honeycomb-type packing material is supplied by a feed mechanism to overlie the conveyor. e The feed mechanism includes a toothed driven wheel (14), a guiding cutter (16) and a pressure roller (17) which slides the web over the belt. The distance between the teeth of the driven wheel corresponds to the distance between the cells of the packaging material. Inside the main conveyor belt moves an auxiliary belt (7) which has no openings. The upper part of this belt is held by spacing rollers (8) at approx. 2 cm from the upper part of the main belt.
