The hand tool is intended for laying floor tiles (8). It comprises two plates (1,2) which are hinge-coupled (5,7) and have rectangular downward edges (3) at their ends away from the coupling (5,7). One plate (1) is provided with a handle (4). The arrangement is such that the edges (3) grip opposite edges of the tile when the tool is lifted so that this tile can be placed with the usual spacing from a tile already in position. The coupling may comprise hooks (7) on one plate (2) engaging corresponding openings (5) in the other (1). The plate (1) may have several sets of openings (5,6) to permit handling tiles of different sizes.
