The chassis is filled with earth and with topsoil in partic. and is used as a noise barrier between major highways and residential areas etc. Posts provide primary support, their two sides including inclined grooves which house the ends of rails comprised of longitudinal planks. Two parallel fences comprised of timber posts and plank rails constitute the chassis, the interval between them being set by internal ties. The internal faces of the fences may be lined with a coarse mesh fabric or a membrane which may be perishable. The feet of the posts house into sockets in a concrete base slab.
