The separator (1) is for separating a lighter (20) from a heavier (22) liq., e.g. oil from and oil in water suspension (or, in another embodiment, a heavier from a lighter liq., e.g. water from toluene as carrier liq.). It comprises a housing (2) with mixture inlet (3) to an inlet chamber (4) and containing a collecting space (18) with outlet (19) for the liq. (20), a collecting space (34) with outlet (21) for the liq. (22), a coalescer (5) consisting of a bed (7,8) of granular material connecting with the chamber (4), and a plate separator (10) with inclined parallel plates (15). Coalescer and separator (10) are vertically spaced, their respective boundaries (9 and 11) defining a transition space (12) which connects to a vertical entry duct (13) one side (28) of which contains the entries (14) to the spaces (16) between the separator plates (15). Used for sepg. lighter liquid suspended in heavier liquid or heavier suspended in lighter liq. Combining the coalescer and plate separator in a common housing eliminates the need for external connections and for a large stagnation chamber upstream of that separator, thus providing a very compact assembly.
