Porous, polar copolymers are prepd. from a monomer mixt. comprising (A) 2-98 wt. % of =1 crosslinkable monomer contg. several and (B) 98-2 wt. selected from (a) copolymerisable, monoethylenic cpds. and (b) monomers contg. conjugated diene systems, 15-100 wt.% of the total (A) + (B) being polar units. The mixt. is polymerised in the presence of a liq. organic medium which does not react with (A) and (B) and which consists of either (I) a mixt. of organic liqs. (i) and (ii) such that the homopolymers of (A) and (B) are soluble in (i) but insol. in (ii) or (II) =1 liq. in which one homopolymer is soluble and at least one other is insol. Used partic. as ion exchange resins; also as adsorbents, the stationary phase in chromatography, carriers for catalysts and for immobilised enzymes. Porous resins previously known have various disadvantages, including poor mechanical strength and variability of polar characteristics. In some process involving solvent mixts., the choice of satisfactory solvent systems is difficult. The invention enables these problems to be avoided and makes possible the prepn. of porous, polar copolymers of pore size 40 angstroms or more, large pore volume and high mechanical strength.
