The shelf made of wood material according to the invention is provided, along its short edges and on both sides of the shelf, with zones in which the wood material has been pressed in and over which have been placed edge fittings 2 in the form of U-profile metal elements having gables 3, 4 with holes 6 for screws 7 which, when the shelves are placed between uprights 8, are introduced into through holes 9 in these uprights and screwed into the holes in the edge fitting gables. In accordance with the inventive method of producing the shelves, the wood material is pressed together, from both sides of the shelf, in the said zones, after which the edge fittings are applied over these zones and the wood material is allowed to exert an outwardly directed pressure against the edge fittings as a result of endeavouring to recover the original material thickness.
