Vertical cableways formed from endless cables are arranged along one or more delimiting walls of the building. Inserted between the cables are carriages which are guided on the building walls at given spacings and between which treadplates are mounted. Also arranged on the cableways are vessels which can be filled up with water and which are filled up with water from a filling line provided with outlet nozzles. The shaft of the cable drums of the cableways is coupled to a brake device which is active depending upon the cable speed. On the falling strand of the device, an access platform is arranged for each storey, which is accessible via a safety waiting room and an escape door and from which the steps can be reached. Along the rising strand of the device, there are designed in the ground floor an access door and in the individual storeys exit doors. The device is surrounded on all sides in a fireproof manner by elements belonging to the building. In the event of escape, the device is set in operation by the persons climbing on the steps and under the weight of the water flowing into the vessels on the falling strand of the cableways.
