Hexahydroindazolo or hexahydroisoindolo isoquinolines of the formula CHEM wherein R is H, alkyl, allyl or benzyl; R1 and R2 are independently H, OH or alkoxy, with the limitation that when either R1 or R2 is OH, then the other R1 or R2 can not be alkoxy; Z is CHEM R3 is H or -@-(C1-C2)alkyl; and the dotted line represents the presence of one double bond at either 7a-10a or 7a-8, having dopamine agonist and dopamine antagonist activity, are described herein. The compounds are prepared by reacting the the corresponding 8-dimethylaminomethylene derivative with a substituted amino. Novel intermediates are also disclosed.
