STATIC INVERTER AND A TRANSFORMER FOR USE IN A STATIC INVERTER

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:A static inverter and a transformer for use in a static inverter aredisclosed. The inverter comprises one or two switching semiconductordevices and a novel power transformer having a primary winding and firstand second control windings associated with a linear magnetic core. Apair of serially arranged apertures partition the core into five localizedbranches. The second control winding is coupled via a central branchlying between the apertures, to the first control winding. At the initial partof each switching cycle, regenerative control action is provided to theassociated switching device by the first control winding. As the cycleprogresses, a pair of branches saturate, reducing the regenerative controlaction, and diverting the main flux through the central branch in a sensereversed to that provided by the first control winding. When the main fluxis coupled to the second control winding, degenerative control action results,completing the turn off of the semiconductor device. The five branch arrange-ment provides a carefully matched control voltage to the associated semi-conductor devices, improving the life and reliability of the devices andenhancing the efficiency of the inverter.
