The deviationis effected independently of collection by optical radiantenergy transmitting or reflecting means. The differentphotodetecting devices enable the measurement of energydirected along the particular path which is identified withthat device. The paths are established by the deviating meansrather than permitted to evolve by the scattering phenomenathemselves whereby the photodetecting devices can be locatedin convenient arrangements and may be conventional inconstruction. Different forms of the invention combineoptical reflection or refraction for collecting the scatteredradiant energy with optical reflection or refraction fordeviation to achieve different advantages and results.-1-.
