7,660APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MEASURINGTHE DISTRIBUTION OF RADIANT ENERGYPRODUCED IN PARTICLE INVESTIGATINGSYSTEMSABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREIn an apparatus in Which particles are passed through anoptical sensing zone to measure their radiant energydistribution such as, for example, light scatteringcharacteristics for the purpose of identifying the particles,means and a method are provided for deviating the collectedlight in accordance with predetermined different paths to aplurality of different photodetecting devices. The deviationis effected independently of collection by optical radiantenergy transmitting or reflecting means. The differentphotodetecting devices enable the measurement of energydirected along the particular path which is identified withthat device. The paths are established by the deviating meansrather than permitted to evolve by the scattering phenomenathemselves whereby the photodetecting devices can be locatedin convenient arrangements and may be conventional inconstruction. Different forms of the invention combineoptical reflection or refraction for collecting the scatteredradiant energy with optical reflection or refraction fordeviation to achieve different advantages and results.-1-.
