ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe present invention relates to apparatus forremoving sediment from the bottom of the sea. The apparatusincludes a suction head for securement to a suction pipewith the suction head providing low frictional resistanceduring penetration and high frictional resistance uponremoval of the suction head in the vertical direction. Thisis accomplished by means of loosening members extendingoutwardly from the suction head and secured thereto in amanner to facilitate penetration and to strip or scrape thesediment upon removal. These loosening members may be inthe form of a folding anchor or a worm member orientated tobe drilled or tapped into the sediment and provide astripping action upon removal. This suction head can beadvantageously employed with a suction pipe and floatingbody having propulsion means for progressively sampling thesediment at spaced locations in a given direction. Priorart devices normally include vibrators which have not beenentirely satisfactory and have difficulty in dense sediment,where one would like to remove a core of sediment.
