Method and device for accurately determining the quantity of the coking properties of green coal by an image processing technique. After the coal is finely pulverized, the powder if solidified with a suitable binder, the surface of the solid coal is polished, and the green coal sample (1) thus obtained is placed on a testing base (6) of a microscope (2), and light reflected from it is collected via an image detector tube (5) with a controller (11). The degree of focusing is calculated by a computer (14) from the image signals, a step motor (9) is operated, thereby performing automatic focusing. The computer (14) extracts the profile of the image data to separate coal particle data and binder data, the data on the coal particles is statistically processed, and the vitrinite data is extracted. The melting component in the coal constitution is measured from the reflection intensity frequency distribution of the vitrinite component of the total coal constitution, and the coking properties are determined from the measured melting component and the mean reflectivity of the vitrinite component.
