Solid state galvanic cell with higher valency metal chlorides as cathodically active mass

A solid state cell which can be discharged at room temperature and which has a negative Li electrode and a solid state electrolyte which conducts Li+ ions, contains a higher-valency metal chloride such as FeCl3, MoCl5 or WCl5 to which an electron-conducting powder (Fe, Mo, W, graphite or soot) has been added as active material in the positive electrode. The discharge of the cell proceeds with good coulomb yield via a plurality of pronounced voltage plateaus, an appreciable proportion of the capacity being drawn at approximately 3 volts. This provides a possibility of producing 3 volt cells in solid state form.
