Combustion chamber (40) intended for use in internal combustion engines with direct or indirect injection and self-ignition, which allows these engines to be operated with substantially pure commercial alcohol or other low carbon index fuels. cetane and has low compression ratios, this chamber comprising a housing (43) which is predominantly in convection heat exchange relation with the combustion zone and which is provided with a plurality of openings (46) which are designed and oriented with respect to the surfaces (47, 48) thereof so as to create an air flow during compression, which air flow allows the light components of a portion of a load of fuel flowing into the combustion chamber and concentrating them near a central zone (50) where these lighter components, generally more volatile, will be subjected to the high temperatures which prevail therein in order to initiate combustion control of the remaining fuel injected into the engine combustion chamber. According to an alternative embodiment, the combustion chambers (80) can be mounted directly on the walls (73) of the combustion cavity (72) formed in the upper part of the piston (65). The combustion chamber (80) comprises a housing (82) provided with rows of openings (86).
