The rotary kiln is operated using solid reducing agents with a high proportion of volatile constituents under the direct current flow of feed and gas atmosphere with a central burner at the entry end. In order to avoid a high heating chamber load in the heating zone and nevertheless increase the heating speed, solid, carbon-containing reducing agent with a high content of volatile constituents is charged with the iron oxide-containing material into the inlet end of the rotary kiln, in the heating zone oxygen-containing gases are injected into the free gas space and into the feeder using nozzle stones blown, and in the reduction zone blown oxygen-containing gases into the free furnace space by means of nozzle stones.
