A method for forming films of material suitable for solar energy conversion devices has the following steps. A glass substrate (20) is removed through a plurality of heat zones. At least one surface of the substrate is established within the heat zone at a preselected temp. and a portion of at least one surface is sprayed with a compd. while the portion of at least one surface is within the heat zone. The heaters are selectively energized within each of the heat zones to obtain a thermal energy input distribution, which approximates thermal energy loss from the substrate to main-tain at least one surface within a range of effective temp.
