The process for the preparation of microbial protein on its own or a mixture of protein and fat from plant carbohydrates by culture of a microbe comprises a combination of the following steps: liquefaction of starch using a dextrinogenic enzyme in a liquefaction container, simultaneous carrying out of a saccharification and the culture of the microbes in a fermentation container by aseptic addition of a saccharogenic amylase to the culture medium obtained in the liquefaction step and separation of the cultured microbial cells from the culture medium.
