Both sections operate isochronously. Data signals arriving over the first transmission section are fed in series into an input shift register (SE1) by clock pulses (T1') coinciding with a signal element middle; after a data symbol is fed into the register (SR1), a transfer pulse (T2) is generated which transfers in parallel the input register content to an intermediate store (SP); a delivery pulse (T3) is derived about half-way between two transfer pulses (T2) of the second transmission section beat (T4); this pulse transfers in parallel the intermediate store content to an output shift register (SR2) and reads out in series at the beat (T4') of the second transmission section; when a switching criterion appears, the transfer pulses (T2) and/or the delivery pulses (T3) are reset to fixed time instants.
