method for obtaining the benzophenanthridin alkaloids, chelidonin, chelerythrin and sanguinarin from powdered plant material

In the isolation of the benzophenanthridine alkaloids chelidonine (I), chelerythrin (II) and sanguinarin (III) from plant material (e.g. Cheledonius root) contg. them, the dried and powdered plant material is moistened with ammonia soln. and extracted with CHCl3. The extract is worked up to give the alkaloids. (I) has spasmolytic activity. (II) and (III) have antibacterial activity, and (III) also has antibiotic and antimycotic activity. The procedures give the pure alkaloids (I), (II) and (III) in the quantities required for pharmaceutical use.
