The invention relates to plasmids with a gene which codes for cobalt resistance. These plasmids confer on the microorganisms into which they are transformed resistance to cobalt in a concentration of at least 4 nmol/l. The invention also embraces a process for the production of cobalt-resistant microorganisms by transformation of a plasmid with a gene which codes for cobalt resistance. Furthermore, the invention also relates to the use of the cobalt-resistant microorganisms for removing cobalt from cobalt-containing solutions.
