For supplying a building with heat, hot water and power a small combined heat and power plant is described, which is to be installed in the building, for example in a detached house, in place of a heating boiler. This plant comprises a number of small motors for driving electrical generators and a heat pump, which can be set in operation as required. The heating and hot water demand of the building is met in that heat for heating is provided from the surroundings by means, for example, of a gas engine-driven heat pump and that waste heat released from the drive motors is collected in a hot water tank and held ready to meet demand. In order to increase the service life of the motors designed as an internal combustion engine, the latter are kept constantly at operating temperature in that, for example, where air cooled motors are used, the cooling air of at least one constantly running motor is utilised to maintain the operating temperature of the other motors. The proposed combined heat and power plant is capable of extremely flexible adaptation to the particular energy demand conditions.
