A railway vehicle, in particular a tramway vehicle, the ends of which have lateral wall portions (4a) tapered in accordance with the dimensions of the vehicle (e. g. width, length of vehicle overhang) and the conditions of the track (e. g. radii of curves, distances between centres of tracks), at least one end being provided with an entrance inside one of its tapered lateral wall portions (4a) and the said entrance comprising a pivoting step (1) with a foot plate (2) which projects beyond the vertical plane of the said lateral wall portion (4a) in the position of use, characterized in that the foot plate (2) of the pivoting step (1) is pivotable into its position of use about a vertical pivot axis (3) rigid with the vehicle, the outer longitudinal edge (2a) of the foot plate (2) extending in this position as far as possible parallel to the vertical plane of the lateral wall (4) of the vehicle and in this plane.
