The process for applying wear-resistant coatings of titanium carbide or titanium carbonitride to products made of sintered hard alloys consists in treating the products mentioned in a closed space at a pressure at 1 x 10-5 to 1.0 mm Hg and a temperature of 1100 to 1250 DEG C. The products are first treated with a carbon-containing gas, then with titanium chlorides which are obtained by treatment of the titanium reagent introduced into the closed space together with the products with carbon tetrachloride. The products are then treated with a carbon- or nitrogen-containing gas.
