For insulating such roof coverings, insulating sheets with a smooth surface on the underside and a surface corrugated approximately in accordance with the spacing of the corrugated sheets on the upper side have already been arranged underneath the corrugated sheets. In this case, condensation water can form between insulating sheets and corrugated sheets. Retroactive insulation of corrugated roofs requires, inter alia, the laborious recladding of the entire roof covering. A considerable simplification is afforded by an insulating element whose crowns of corrugation are so designed that, when laid on the upper side of the corrugated asbestos-cement sheets, they completely fill up the entire cross-section of their valleys of corrugation, even when taking into account the step at the overlapping point of two corrugated sheets. The corrugated lower part of the insulating element can consist of individual insulating bars which correspond to the valleys of corrugation of the corrugated sheets and on which is laid an insulating sheet which is smooth on both sides and of any desired thickness. The insulating bars can be connected, in the region of their ends, at mutual distances in accordance with the spacing of corrugation, in particular by adhesive strips which can stretch to a certain extent.
