A method for the loosening of heavy or highly compacted arable soils proposes, in order to save pulling force, a mode of operation or an implement design in which the undercutting and lifting of the uppermost soil layer takes place by means of narrow tools (2), especially blade shares, which are located at a horizontal distance (b) from one another which is at least equal to or wider than the width (c) of the narrow tools (2), the working depth being dimensioned in such a way that the upper soil layer located in the region of the clearances (2) between the tools (2) is likewise also lifted.
