In an attachment like a steady rest for clamping and/or holding a workpiece (2) on lathes, the holding members (4, 5 and 6) of which can be actuated by means of a piston (15) acted upon by pressure medium, a pressure-measuring element (31) with an electric output signal is allocated to this piston (15). All forces occurring in the clamping attachment (1) are detected by means of the pressure-measuring element (31).
