In tanks with a floating roof and a temperature of the tank liquid differing from the ambient temperature, there is the problem of excessive heat loss through the roof membrane (1). For heat insulation, the roof membrane (1) is lined on its underside facing the liquid in the tank with a flat heat insulation material (7) in the form of pre-fabricated heat insulation bodies (3) which are mounted on the underside of the roof membrane (1) by bearing elements (2). With appropriate adjustment of the specific weight of the heat insulation bodies (3), they simultaneously act as floats and thus support the roof membrane (1) from below. If the heat insulation bodies (3) are constructed in strip shape with a maximum width (b) of about 1 m, the heat insulation bodies (3) can be transported through manholes in the tank wall and thus mounted or exchanged without problems when the tank is empty. For use in fire-risk environments, heat insulation bodies (3) are particularly suitable with a welded covering (8) made of sheet metal or metal foil and heat insulation material (7) sealed inside, in particular on the basis of mineral fibres.
