In order to be able to make hygienically acceptable potable water available in a sufficient quantity in underdeveloped countries, it is provided according to the figure that heat is removed from the surrounding air at condenser surfaces (4) set up in the open to such an extent that atmospheric humidity condenses out on the condenser surfaces (9), runs downwards and is collected in catchment devices (6). To transport the heat away from the condensers (4), a circulation arrangement (2) is used which connects the condenser (4) to a soil heat exchanger (1). A circulation pump (3) holds a heat transfer fluid in circulation between the two parts, so that the condenser surfaces are always cooled to a temperature in the range between 4 and 8 DEG C.
