In a process for stripping dissolved gases, in particular oxygen, from liquids, in particular water, by vacuum degassing and in a device for carrying out the process, a predetermined quantity of another gas soluble in the liquid is dissolved in the liquid which is to be degassed, and the liquid thus impregnated is introduced into a closed space in which a predetermined gas pressure below atmospheric pressure is maintained and the gas escaping from the liquid is continuously pumped away. The impregnation can be carried out with nitrogen or carbon dioxide gas, and the vacuum degassing can be carried out in a plurality of stages.
