The present idea ensures that the headlights adjust themselves automatically to the position with respect to the carriageway which has been set in the state of rest of the vehicle, when position changes of the chassis due to oscillations or loading of the boot change the setting of the headlights with respect to the carriageway. In each case a cam attached to the oscillation element controls a hydraulic cylinder connected to the chassis. The control is dependent on the oscillation of the chassis which changes the position of the headlights and the position of the oscillation elements. The displacement distance of the oscillation of each oscillation element is reduced via the cam and transmitted to the cylinder. With the pressure piston, a second cylinder, which is connected to the corresponding headlight, is actuated via a rigid tube system and initiates the correction of the swivellably mounted headlight. By means of corresponding positioning (diagonal arrangement, front with respect to the rear) and changing the mode of operation (opposed operation of individual cylinders), each type of oscillation of the vehicle is included in the control system.
