The apparatus for determining the amount of leakage of a gas-air mixture from closed systems effects a process for determining the amount of leakage of a gas-air mixture from closed systems, and contains a working chamber (3) connected to an apparatus (1) for withdrawing the gas-air mixture and to a vacuum pump (9). An infrared radiation source (11) is arranged with regard to an entry opening (10) of the chamber (3), while an infrared radiation receiver (14) is arranged in the path of the beam leaving the chamber (3) with the gas-air mixture, which receiver is electrically coupled to an input (16) of a comparator circuit (17). Electric valves (7 and 8 respectively) are arranged directly at the inlet and outlet of the chamber (3), and a vacuum pump (6) is arranged at the outlet of the chamber (3) to conduct the gas-air mixture, with the valve (8) closed, until the concentration of a sample gas in the gas-air mixture in the chamber (3) has become equal to its predetermined concentration in the gas-air mixture in the closed system. The time to produce equality of the concentrations, and a pressure gradient in the chamber (3) from the beginning of infeed of the gas-air mixture to a pressure reached at equality of the concentrations, are measured by a timer clock (41) and a pressure transducer (20) which are connected to a computer unit (19); the amount of leakage is determined by the computer unit (19) according to the flow quantity of the gas-air mixture from the closed system.
