The invention relates to a method and a device for operating cooling towers which serve to recool cooling water, in particular natural draught cooling towers, in which in the event of falling external temperatures in conjunction with a change in the air throughput in the cooling tower a water temperature is maintained which prevents the formation of dangerous ice deposits from the cooling water raining down; according to the invention it is provided in this arrangement that, essentially in conjunction with maintenance of the feed temperature and rate of flow of the water raining down, the air throughput of the cooling tower is reduced by restricting a tower cross-section, which determines the amount of air, as a function of the discharge temperature of the cooled water.
