The invention relates to a process and to a beet-harvesting machine for digging up beet with leaf recovery, in which, with one and the same machine rig, in a first machine trip more, at least twice as many, beet rows are deleaved than dug and, in at least one subsequent trip of the same machine rig, only the previously deleaved beet row or beet rows are dug. The beet-harvesting machine according to the invention can be designed as a self-propelled vehicle, as a tractor-drawn machine with a leaf-harvesting and digging device carried by the machine frame or as a combined machine rig with a leaf harvester provided on a ''tractor'' as a front mounting and with a digger provided as a rear mounting. The beat-deleaving device interacting with a transloading device can be designed as a pretopper or topper.
