The invention is based on the object of cold-briquetting non-caking or weakly caking fine coal of relatively high ash content and making it usable as a briquette for the fixed bed of gasifier reactors and shaft furnaces, the production costs remaining within economically tolerable limits. For this purpose, the combination of the features provides that 30-85%, preferably 60-85%, of non-caking raw coal, for example anthracite, and 15-70%, preferably 15-40%, of caking raw coal are mixed and then briquetted, the coals having a grain size of 5 mm, a moisture content of 5-10% and an ash content of 20-35%, the caking coal having a swelling index of 5 and the coal being mixed with 3-8% of sulphite base liquor or 1-3% of raw starch or the like, the mixture being compacted without heat supply to give briquette pieces and these then being dried to a moisture content of less than 5%.
