The invention relates to the technical modification and particular application of the conventional proton magnetometer, which is generally widespread in geophysical deposit prospecting and serves for measuring the local terrestrial magnetic field on the ground or from aircraft. The problem, is, however, that the terrestrial field is subjected to temporal variations which corrupt the measurement results, so that this (drift effect) has to be corrected in the interests of more precise and correct measuring results, and this has been done to date in a manner which is technically complicated and labour-intensive. This is avoided by the use of the dual sensor instrument (DSG, Fig. 1) proposed in the invention, which makes use of two sensors (S1, S2) at in each case two adjacent stations (1 + 2, 2 + 3, 3 + 4 etc.) to undertake in each case closely succeeding measurements. In this way, two things are achieved: 1. The drift effect is negligibly small since the amount of drift generally increases with the time interval between the individual station measurements. 2. The amount of drift at the respective instant is determined by the double measurement of the stations, and can thus be used for drift correction of the results of conventional single-sensor instruments.
