The rotating disc trenching machine may be used to dig wide drainage ditches, and may include a system of ramps (11), chutes and conveyor belts to remove excavated soil to a position offset relative to the trench. The unit may be coupled behind a tractor. The machine inlcudes a chassis (1, 2) which travels along the trench line, and an exca ator disc (4) on a chassis-mounted transverse axle (5). The wheel projects below the chassis to effect the cut. Ancillary fittings (19, 6) limit the depth of cut and transmit drive to the wheel. The sense of wheel rotation (7) may be such that the lower rim moves in the opposite direction to that of the machine. The disc may have alternate blades (22, 23) projecting in opposite lateral directions from the rim.
