The 4-acetamidophenyl alpha -(2-methyl-ind-[en/ol]-3-yl)acetates of the general formula III IMAGE in which A denotes a 3bLC.Cl, 3bLN, 3bLC.H or 3bLC.SO.CH3 group, R denotes a fluorine atom or a methoxy group, n denotes 0 or 1, and either X denotes a nitrogen atom and Y denotes a -CO- bond or X denotes a carbon atom and Y denotes a =CH bond and the broken line denotes a second C-C bond are novel compounds which are anti-inflammatory analgesics and/or have an analgesic action. The compounds are particularly useful since they cause practically no unwanted side effects on the digestive tract.
