Continuous casting of metals or alloys, esp. steel - using horizontal or inclined mould surrounded by an inductor causing rotation of melt in mould

The molten metal flows from a vessel into a mould which is horizontal or inclined; and the metal flowing through the mould is subjected to electromagnetic forces subjecting the melt to =1 rotary motion round the axis of the mould. The melt in the mould is pref. also subjected by the electromagnet force to an acceleration in the direction of casting. The pref. plant includes a mould contg. an electromagnetic inductor located in the water cooling circuit in the mould, and creating at least one rotary magnetic field. The inductor is pref. near the inlet end of the mould so it applies force to the molten core in the cast billet. Method prevents surface defects on the cast billets, esp. defects due to inclusions rising to the top of the melt in the entry to the mould.
